Back in stone age people used ASCII art because early printers often lacked graphics ability and thus characters were used in place of graphic marks. Later on people used it to text their girlfriends with tiny 10 digit mobile phone screens. These days I use it to waste time and ruin my eyesight for no meaningful reason.
Ah, and Ascii stands for American Standard Code for Information Interchange, if you ever wonder but im sure no one ever cares any more... (apart from die hard roguelike fans)
